Chief Constable of Sussex Police

Jo Blake

In March 1844 Henry Solomon became famous as the only Chief Constable in the country to have been murdered whilst in office. He was interviewing in his office a carpet thief, John Lawrence. Lawrence picked up a poker from the fireplace and struck Solomon on the head, causing an injury from which he died the next day. Solomon is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Ditchling Road. Lawrence was hanged at Horsham Gaol three weeks later.
