In July a number of reports were received at Hove police station regarding a strange animal.
A telephone call was then received that a strange creature was in the garden of a local house. Two of our officers attended and found a racoon asleep on a wall.
As one of the officers attempted to befriend the animal in order to make capture easier his attention was drawn to someone calling from behind. ‘I turned with my right arm still extended towards the animal. I felt the animal bite my right thumb causing it to bleed.’
The racoon was subsequently captured, taken to the police station and later handed to an animal specialist from a local zoo. The police officer received hospital treatment.
Racoons average 24 to 38 inches in length and can weigh between 14 and 23 lbs. They are native to North America and can be found throughout the United States
At the close of the year there were 4,754 registered aliens living in Sussex.
