Henry Dudeney 1905 – 1970

My great-grandad – Henry Dudeney – worked as one of the jailers in the old Police Cells at Brighton Town Hall between 1953 – 1965.

His Police number was PC188.

The prisoners who had to go to Worrmwood Scrubs prison in London were taken there by train. My great-grandad had to take them up there on the trainĀ and had to have them handcuffed to him…..I don’t think they had much chance of escape as he was 6′ 5″ and weighed in at about 20 stone!

He was with the Police force for 22 years, firstly working on the beat for 10 years and then 12 years as a jailer.

This is the only photograph we have of him in his Police uniform.

Sadly he passed away when he retired aged 65, long before I was born.
