A day on the pier

View of Brighton Pier from the beach. Waves crash on the shore. People wearing coats walk along the pier and have fun at amusements such as the shooting range. A small girl has her portrait sketched. Children ride around on a roundabout.

People eat at a shell fish shop. At a stall, a girl rummages for a seashell that will tell her horoscope. Two women come out of the palmist parlour. Two women walk along the pier with their skirts flying open in the wind to reveal shorts. They wear turbans, sunglasses and little summery tops and lean over the railings to eat ice-cream from paper.

Various shots of crowds watching a man demonstrating ‘the knife of the world’ by peeling an apple. Good shots of people asleep in deck chairs on the pier. One man is fast asleep with his hand up his jumper.

The promettes

The promettes are trainee models who are on duty at weekends in the summer, dressed like air hostesses. They offer advice and answer questions from tourists in Brighton.(The commentary begins “for those men among you who like girls with brains there’s no place like Brighton for a holiday”). They are lined up in front of caravan which has “Brighton Promette Bureau” on it, to be inspected. They then gather round their supervisor before setting off. They leave in pairs. They come across a poor man who can’t seem to hold a baby and use a telephone at the same time, so they offer to hold the child. Another pair come across a woman photographing her friends and they offer to take the photo for her. Back to the bloke in the phone box who takes his child back.
