PC Goad instructing families in gas mask training in 1939. This posed photo was used by the press to encourage the public to take part in the training. World War Two air raids caused 200 deaths in Eastbourne, along with 1200 injuries and 1475 buildings destroyed or badly damaged (including the Old Technical Institute which housed the library and museum).

An RAF plane crashes at Rottingdean in July 1939. Despite the young pilot’s disastrous start, he later earned further press coverage in the subsequent war for shooting down enemy aircraft.
